Changes made to the five articles of this publication will appear in reverse chronological order (most recent at the top). Because the five essays are still under construction and will be so for a long time, this article will be updated more frequently than all others.
May 19, 2024: The publication contains many references to a formal approach to democratic governance. Went through all the essays and added some explanatory notes to what these formal approaches may eventually look like. With the understanding that this is still work in progress.
May 12, 2024: Added a video clip to the section In the age of AI, Democracy as a Foundation Model of Appendix 1: Reader's Guide which I hope clarifies that the foundation model for democracy cannot be based on any current foundation model in general or any LLMs in particular. Secondly, added a diagram to the section AI Offers us a Unique Opportunity to Get Democracy Right of the same appendix which shows simplistically how a combination of a deductive system and a statistical foundation model would be used to create a democracy model. Thirdly, updated all the essays to recommend that before reading any essay, reader should read Appendix 1: Reader's Guide first, if he/she hasn’t done that already.
May 9, 2024: Added a section Combining AI with Mathematical Logic to Detect Disinformation and a section AI Can Help Voter Education and Representation to the Democracy as a Champion of Human Values essay.
May 3, 2024: Added a Reader's Guide to this Publication in which I consolidate a set of basic concepts that are common to all essays and which aim to help the reader tie them all together into a whole.
May 2, 2024: Added an “under construction” warning to all essays. Pushed more extensive changes to the Democracy as a Champion of Human Values essay; in particular, added a section about National Approaches to Reconciliation of Values and left placeholders for the various ways AI can help strengthen democratic institutions.
